Gaza banks close following robbery

GAZA, March 3 (UPI) -- All banks in Gaza were ordered closed Thursday following the robbery of the Palestine Investment Bank in Gaza City, officials said.

The Palestinian Monetary Authority said the banks would remain closed until the money taken from the bank is recovered, the Palestinian Ma'an news agency reported.

The authority did not say how much money was taken and it didn't identify the thieves, but said it "resents, denounces and condemns the attack."

Gaza's banking sector has suffered because physical cash has been barred from entering the region. Banking services were also destabilized. The Arab Bank closed all but two of its branches last year.

The authority said the bank would not collapse although some feared it would close indefinitely.
