Israel retaliates for Gaza rockets

Feb. 26, 2011 at 7:21 PM   |   Comments

JERUSALEM, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- Israel responded to rockets fired from Gaza with air strikes on Islamic Jihad targets near Khan Younis, officials said Saturday.

Palestinian officials said four people on the ground were injured, one of them a baby, The Jerusalem Post reported.

Israeli officials said two Kassam rockets were fired into the Negev in Israel Friday, while a third rocket fell short and landed in Gaza. Earlier in the week, Katyusha rockets were fired at Beersheba for the first time since the Israeli invasion of Gaza two years ago.

"The strike was in response to rocket attacks on Israeli territory and the IDF [Israeli Defense Force] will continue to work against terrorist activity that threatens the state of Israel," the Israeli military said in a statement Saturday.

No Israeli injuries were reported in the rocket attacks or the air strikes.

"I do not suggest that anyone test the state of Israel's resolve," Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said after Wednesday's rocket attack.
