STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- As the 25th anniversary of the killing of former Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme approaches, police say there is no suspect -- despite plenty of confessions.

More than a hundred people have confessed to the Feb. 28, 1986 assassination over the years, Swedish police say, but all have been disregarded as suspects in Palme's killing, the Swedish news agency Tidningarnas Telegrambyra reported Tuesday.

Kerstin Skarp, the sixth person to be in charge of the investigation, said there was no particular suspect but that the inquiries would continue.

"When there is absolutely nothing to work with and we have reached a dead end, then it shall be closed. But we are not there yet," she said at a news conference held by Sweden's National Bureau of Investigation.

Palme was walking with his wife in central Stockholm close to midnight when he was fatally shot in the back at close range.

A second shot wounded his wife, who later recovered.

Palme had twice been Sweden's prime minister, from 1969 to 1976 and 1982 to 1986.
