Blizzard snarls travel around Winnipeg

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- Many roads and schools around Winnipeg, Manitoba, were closed Friday morning after a blizzard hit the area, authorities said.

The Trans-Canada Highway between Winnipeg and Brandon was shut down, along with other major roads, the CBC reported.

Delays and cancellations affected travel at James A. Richardson International Airport, and 10 incoming flights were diverted Thursday night.

"This is the worst we have seen this winter for visibility," airport spokeswoman Christine Alongi said.

The storm moved into Ontario Friday and 40-mph wind gusts reduced visibility to zero in many spots.

A crash that killed a man and injured his three children near Austin, Manitoba, Thursday night may have been caused by whiteout conditions, police said. Their pickup truck was hit by a CN Rail freight train.
