Posters threaten Serbian journalists

BELGRADE, Serbia, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- A Serbian journalists association Wednesday called on authorities to find those responsible for threatening the life of broadcaster B92's editor-in-chief.

Death notices with the names of editor Veran Matic and the authors of the B92 program Insajder were found plastered all over the town of Lazarevac, B92 reported.

Local police said they do not know who is behind the posters but B92 suspects the threat may be connected to Insajder's investigation of abuses at the Kolubara coal mine.

The Independent Association of Journalists of Serbia has called on authorities to find and punish the people responsible for the posters.

"There's no doubt that the notices are a blunt threat to the journalists, but also a warning to potential witnesses about what could happen to them if they openly spoke about the abuses in the Kolubara mines," said Jelka Jovanovic, deputy president of the journalists' association.
