Suicide father leaves confession letter

CERIGNOLA, Italy, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- Before killing himself, the Canadian father of two daughters missing for nearly a month left a letter to their mother confessing to killing them, police say.

In the letter mailed from Cerignola, Italy, dated Feb. 3, Matthias Kaspar Schepp told his estranged wife he killed their Swiss-born daughters, Livia and Alessia, and he intended soon to kill himself, the QMI Agency reported Friday.

Police said they've been aware of the letter since Tuesday but kept it quiet while they investigated.

"The exact contents of this letter were meticulously analyzed by the investigators in order to determine if any elements could help locate the twins. The family was alerted the same day to the letter's arrival and it was provided with a copy. The family also agreed not to speak of it in order not to disrupt search operations for the two girls," police said.

Schepp arrived in Corsica with his daughters Feb. 1, police say, and they found his body Feb. 3 in Cerignola where he had thrown himself under a train, the news agency said.

Schepp had sent eight letters to his ex-wife; one was from Corsica, where the man was suspected to have taken a ferry with his daughters who went missing Jan. 30, World Radio Switzerland reported.
