Chinese FM speaks on Egypt

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- China's foreign minister says his government is paying close attention to the events in Egypt, a country he described as vital to the region's stability.

Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, visiting the United Arab Emirates, made his comments in a telephone talk with his Egyptian counterpart Ahmed Abul Gheit, the official Xinhua news agency said in a brief report.

The various Chinese official media outlets have not commented much thus far about the turmoil unfolding in Egypt.

Yang said China believes Egypt has sufficient wisdom and capability to overcome difficulties and realize national stability and development, Xinhua reported.

He said Egypt is an influential country in the Middle East and is vital to the region stability.

Yang said Egypt's internal affairs should be resolved by Egyptians themselves without outside interference, Xinhua said.

Gheit briefed the Chinese official and said his government is taking measures to safeguard social stability and return the country to normalcy, the report said.
