Cyclone Anthony pounds northeast Australia

TOWNSVILLE, Australia, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- Weather forecasters reported heavy wind and rain in northeastern Australia as Cyclone Anthony made landfall Sunday.

Anthony hit land near Bowen in north Queensland packing wind gusts up to 155 kilometers per hour (96.3 miles per hour) and torrential rains along the Clarke Range, forecasters told the Australian Broadcasting Corp.

"All our front of our house, all the trees are down," one Campwin Beach resident told the ABC. "We tied everything down on the side of the house this afternoon and it's all been ripped to pieces."

The Tropical Cyclone Warning Center told the ABC some areas of Australia could get 11 inches of rain. Anthony was expected to swing southward and weaken over the course of the week.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard urged residents to remain in their homes until the storm passed.

Meantime, forecasters said Tropical Cyclone Yasi was in position to move into Queensland sometime Thursday.
