BANGKOK, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- A monk and three soldiers were injured Saturday when a bomb was deliberately set off as they passed by.

All four were hospitalized with injuries, the Bangkok Post reported. The soldiers had been providing protection for the monk as he made his rounds to collect alms in Pattani province.

Pattani Deputy Gov. Lertkiat Wongpopan said the placing of the bomb was captured by a security camera that showed two men were involved.

On Friday, Maraseng Sa-a, 35, a territorial defense volunteer was shot and killed in Pattani, allegedly by an insurgent. Two other killings in Pattani were not believed to be political.

Pattani is in southern Thailand on the Malay peninsula. Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said the government is gradually ending violence in the south.

However, he said, "It's not like turning off a light.'
