Scaffolding collapses, at least 10 dead

MANILA, Philippines, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- A scaffolding on a planned 40-story building in the Philippine capital of Manila collapsed Thursday, killing at least 10 workers, authorities said.

The incident in Makati occurred at a building under construction, the Philippine Star reported. Authorities feared the toll of the dead and injured could rise, the report said.

Police Chief Froilan Bonifacio was quoted as saying the incident occurred around 11:45 a.m. on the 34th floor of the Eton Residences building under construction.

Fire department teams were at the scene to assist in rescue operations.
