Charges in death of mayor's bodyguard

JUAREZ, Mexico, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Authorities in Juarez, Mexico, say they've charged four federal police officers in the shooting death of a bodyguard for the city's mayor.

The Mexican Attorney General's Office said the police agents were arrested in the death of Jorge Humberto Munoz Perez, 29, who was shot and killed Tuesday, the El Paso (Texas) Times reported.

Mayor Hector Murguia blamed federal agents in the death of his bodyguard.

In a statement Wednesday, the federal police said Munoz Perez and another bodyguard pointed their rifles at the agents who were investigating a report of men with rifles in a Juarez street.

Murguia has asked the Juarez city council to review the level of violence in Juarez and the performance of the federal police fighting the crime.

Murguia said the incident showed a lack of responsibility by the federal agents, but said the city government has not decided yet if they will ask the federal police to leave Juarez.

"I am very angry and offended, but we have to act with serenity," Murguia said.
