ST. PETERSBURG, Russia, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- One person was killed and nine hurt Tuesday night when a roof caved in at a St. Petersburg, Russia, shopping mall, a source told ITAR-Tass.

The report said the 500-square-meter (nearly 5,400-square-feet) roof collapsed as workers were clearing it of snow.

The source, an official at the northwestern emergency medical situations center, said the cave-in occurred at the Okay shopping mall near the Ozerki metro station at 8:35 p.m. Moscow time.

Rescuers were clearing the debris.

RIA Novosti put casualties at one dead and two hospitalized.

"Rescuers pulled a woman with severe wounds out of the rubble," an Emergencies Ministry spokesman told the information agency, adding that one of those injured was in critical condition. "Another eight people were taken away in ambulances."

Novosti said nine ambulances and 17 fire engines were at the scene, and machinery was expected to clear the rubble.

Preliminary information said the collapse was caused by the breaking of a concrete construction holding up the glass roof.
