Police: No motive yet in soccer slayings

JUAREZ, Mexico, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- Heavily armed men opened fire at a soccer match in western Juarez, Mexico, killing seven people and wounding two, police said.

Police said they had no motive for the shooting at the field, part of a community center complex opened several months ago in a program designed to decrease drug-related violence, CNN reported Tuesday.

The dead from Sunday's shooting were men ranging in ages from 19 to 26, and at least one was a soccer player, police said.

The gunmen, who reportedly were in three vehicles, peppered the soccer field with about 180 rounds from assault rifles just before the game began, police said.

"We still do not have a motive why they opened fire," city police spokesman Adrian Sanchez told CNN in a phone interview. "They fired 180 rounds in three or four seconds. It happened fast. People here are still confused about what happened."
