Hearing for accused Toronto cop postponed

TORONTO, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- The hearing for a Toronto police officer allegedly caught on video beating a protester at the Group of 20 summit has been postponed for a month, officials say.

Constable Babak Andalib-Goortani was scheduled for a Monday court date, but a representative for his attorney asked for a judicial pretrial on Feb. 28, Postmedia News reported.

Andalib-Goortani was charged with assault with a weapon after a police watchdog group investigated the alleged police beating of Adam Nobody at the June G20 summit in Toronto.

An onlooker's videotape allegedly shows Nobody being tackled and punched repeatedly by police, Postmedia said.

Initially, the provincial Special Investigations Unit was unable to identify any of the police allegedly involved, but it reopened its probe when new and clearer footage of the episode came out.
