Flight diverted after passenger threats

LONDON, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A British man whose threats caused a flight to London to be diverted to another airport under a Royal Air Force escort has been arrested, authorities said.

The Etihad Airways flight from Abu Dhabi to London Heathrow was diverted to Stansted Airport 30 miles northeast of London Monday as two RAF fighters were scrambled to accompany it, Sky News reported.

An Essex Police spokeswoman said a 37-year-old British national was arrested after the plane landed.

"The pilot reported a passenger causing disruption and making threats," she said.

"The plane was diverted to Stansted Airport were it landed just before midday," she said. "No one has been injured and the airport has been operating normally."

Stansted is the designated airport in the United Kingdom to deal with all security-related aviation issues such as hostage-taking and hijacking, Sky News said.

"It was a question of inappropriate comments made on the flight and a disruptive passenger," an Etihad Airways spokesman said.

"There was no threat to the safety of the aircraft or the passengers."
