Poland to re-enact president's plane crash

WARSAW, Poland, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- Polish investigators plan to re-enact the last moments of a jet that crashed in Russia, killing Polish President Lech Kaczynski and 95 others.

A Russian investigation blamed the crash near Smolensk in April on pilot error, a finding Poland disputes, RIA Novosti reported. The re-enactment, using a TU-154 jet like the one that crashed, aims to determine if the crew could have taken any action that might have averted the disaster, Polish officials say.

The jet was carrying Kaczynski and other high-level Polish officials to a ceremony in honor of Polish army officers executed by the Soviet Union in 1940 in what became known as the Katyn Forest Massacre.

Polish officials have said the crash investigation might have to be referred to an international agency if the two countries cannot agree on the cause.
