Israeli army probes checkpoint shooting

HEBRON, West Bank, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- Soldiers shot and critically wounded an Israeli Arab they thought was trying to ram a vehicle into a military checkpoint near Hebron, the army said.

For reasons that remained unclear, soldiers manning the position thought the driver was going to run them over so they opened fire, Ynetnews.com said. The driver was shot in the head.

The incident occurred Thursday night at an impromptu roadblock set up by reservist soldiers checking for stolen cars on Route 60, the Hebron-Jerusalem road.

The injured man was taken to Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem.

The army's deputy district commander arrived at the site shortly after the incident to question the soldiers, the report said.
