Lawyer seeks venue change in Bahrain trial

MANAMA, Bahrain, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- An attorney for a group of defendants suspected of plotting to destabilize Bahrain says he wants the case to be heard in Bahrain's Constitutional Court.

Attorney Abdul Rahman Ghunaim said he hoped the move would expedite resolution of the case for 25 defendants in the Persian Gulf island kingdom and end weeks of stalling, Gulf News reported.

Several lawyers appointed by the court have withdrawn from the case in the past few weeks.

The first attorneys withdrew after the court refused to consider claims of torture by the defendants and a second group of lawyers withdrew when defendants refused to cooperate with them, the report said.

The court Thursday agreed to consider moving the trial to Bahrain's Constitutional Court and postponed the case until Jan. 27.
