Two Thai detainees freed in Cambodia

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia, Jan. 13 (UPI) -- A Thai nationalist leader remained in a Cambodian jail Thursday after two of those arrested with him were released.

Veera Somkwamkid, a coordinator of the Thai Patriots Network, and his secretary are charged with spying, Voice of America reported. The five other detainees include Panich Vikitsreth, a member of Parliament charged with crossing the border illegally.

Vikitsreth and another detainee were released Thursday after posting $328 bail, the Bangkok Post reported. A secretary to Cambodian Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya said the two were taken to the Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh and the conditions of their release include staying in Cambodia until their cases are resolved.

Thai nationalists say the seven were actually kidnapped from Thailand by the Cambodian military, VOA said. The nationalists accuse Cambodia of gradually taking over Thai territory in the border zone.

The rise in tensions on the border appears to have cut the number of Thais traveling to Cambodia to visit the temples of Angkor Wat and Siem Reap and to gamble in Cambodian casinos, the Post said.
