U.S. fighter makes emergency landing

PRESTWICK, Scotland, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- A U.S. fighter jet made an emergency landing Saturday at Prestwick Airport in Scotland after developing a fuel leak, the airport said.

The F-16 was part of a fighter group flying from Spangdahlem Air Base in Germany to the United States. The jet, escorted by another F-16, landed safely at Prestwick about noon, the BBC reported.

Two ambulances and three fire trucks from Strathclyde Fire and Rescue were at the airport when the U.S. jets arrived.

"Prestwick plans and prepares regularly for such an emergency and we are relieved it ended well,"

an airport spokesman said.

Prestwick, about 32 miles southwest of Glasgow, is Scotland's largest commercial airport and fourth busiest. The United States had a base there between 1952 and 1966.
