Iran says woman detained as spy deported

TEHRAN, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Iran has deported a woman it had detained as an alleged U.S. spy after determining she had psychological problems, the Fars News Agency reported Sunday.

The semi-official Iranian news agency said an informed source said Hall Talayan was escorted from the country after it was determined she had lied about being an American spy.

"This woman claimed to have spying devices in her teeth and surrendered herself to the Iranian border guards," the source told Fars. "But further investigations revealed that she had psychological problems and her claims about being a spy and carrying spying devices were not true."

The source said the 55-year-old woman was deported via Jolfa borders after her psychological problems were proved. Talayan had been detained by border officials in Nordouz last week as she entered Iran from Armenia without a visa.

U.S. government officials had denied any knowledge of the woman's activities.
