Police release film of attack on royal car

LONDON, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Police say they hope releasing film of a royal convoy being attacked during a tuition fee protest in London will lead to arrests.

The vehicle carrying British Prince Charles and Camilla, duchess of Cornwall, was doused with paint and sustained broken windows during the December protests over proposed fee hikes. Other vehicles in the convoy also were attacked.

The royal couple were unharmed although there were reports the duchess was poked in the ribs by a stick, The Guardian reported Tuesday. Despite the protesters, the royal convoy did not change its route to the London Palladium.

Police said the footage shows a woman and two men attacking the Rolls-Royce carrying the royal couple and the woman breaking a window on another vehicle in the convoy.

"Although the images are grainy, officers believe members of the public will be able to recognize the individuals featured," the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

Besides the attack on the royal convoy, Detective Chief Superintendent Matthew Horne said police officers were attacked and businesses were vandalized.

"We believe that most of the people whose pictures we have released today (Tuesday) may have committed serious offenses of violent disorder and criminal damage in this area and urge them, or anybody who knows them, to come forward and speak to us," Horne said.
