Town's last police officer kidnapped

JUAREZ, Mexico, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- The last agent on the police force in a small town on the outskirts of Juarez, Mexico, is missing, officials said.

Officials said Ericka Gandara was kidnapped from her Guadalupe home Dec. 23 and hasn't been seen since, CNN reported.

Gandara's family has not filed a report on her disappearance. Officials learned of the incident from her friends, said Arturo Sandoval, a spokesman for the attorney general's office in the state of Chihuahua.

Guadalupe is on the outskirts of Juarez, across the border from El Paso, Texas, and is in the epicenter of Mexico's drug violence, the report said.

In June, criminals shot and killed Guadalupe Mayor Jesus Manuel Lara Rodriguez while his wife and child watched. He was an outspoken opponent of drug cartels.

More than 12,000 Mexicans have been killed in drug-related violence in 2010, the state-run Notimex news agency said.

Earlier this month, Mexican Attorney General Arturo Chavez named Juarez one of "three principal poles" of crime in Mexico.
