Rabbis' wives give dating advice

JERUSALEM, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- Jewish women should not date Arab men or even work where Arabs are employed, a group of rabbis' wives in Israel advocates.

The 27 wives signed a letter disseminated by the Lehava organization, The Jerusalem Post reported Tuesday.

In addition to exhorting Jewish women not to date or work with Arab men, the wives, known as rebbetzins, urge them not to volunteer for national service with them, the newspaper said.

"There are quite a few Arab workers who give themselves Hebrew names," the letter states. "They ask to be close to you, try to find favor with you, and give you all the attention in world, they are actually here knowing to act with courtesy, acting as if they really care for you, say a good word, but their behavior is only temporary. The moment you are in their hands, in their village, under their control, everything changes.

"Your life will never go back to the way it was, and the attention you so desired will turn into curses, beatings, and humiliations."

A few weeks ago, more than 40 rabbis called on Jews not to rent homes in Israel to gentiles, the Post noted. That petition led to a statement from nearly 50 conservative rabbis allowing home rentals or sales to non-Jews in Israel.
