Death toll in Nigerian violence hits 80

JOS, Nigeria, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- Eighty people died in bomb explosions and other sectarian violence in recent days in Jos, Nigeria, a government official said.

Daniel Gambo, deputy director of communications for the National Emergency Management Agency, said another 119 people were treated for injuries at hospitals, the Nigerian Tribune reported Tuesday.

Plateau State Commissioner of Police Abdulrahman Akano told the newspaper 20 houses were also burned down Sunday in Jos neighborhoods, and that two mosques and a Church of Christ in Nigeria church were vandalized.

The police commissioner said relative calm had been restored.

The newspaper reported a special police task force had arrested three people in possession of dynamite who allegedly intended to set off bombs in the city.
