Chinese officials fired over road deaths

BEIJING, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- Six Chinese officials have been fired following a traffic accident in central China's Hunan province that left 14 schoolchildren dead, authorities said.

The children died when the three-wheeled vehicle taking them from Dongtan Village to school in a neighboring village plunged into a creek Monday, Xinhua reported.

Six children injured in the accident were in stable condition in a local hospital, Xinhua said.

The director of the county's education bureau, the head of Yinguo Primary School and the head of the Songjiang Township Center School were fired Tuesday over the accident, a spokesman for the county government said.

Also sacked were three local traffic officials.

"The cause of the accident is still being investigated," the country spokesman said, adding the driver of the three-wheeled vehicle has been detained by police.
