Police quell clashes in Nigerian city

JOS, Nigeria, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- Nigerian riot police are trying to keep the peace in the central city of Jos after bombings and sectarian clashes, authorities said Monday.

A series of explosions Friday killed 32 people and wounded 74 in Jos, which is located on Nigeria's Christian-Muslim fault line, the Voice of America reported.

The bombings sparked clashes between armed Christian and Muslim groups Sunday.

Visiting the city, Deputy Inspector General of Police Abubukar Audu said four mobile police units were sent in from surrounding states.

"So far, the situation is relatively calm -- I mean, has been brought under control," he said.

Audu said he had not heard reports of any deaths in the unrest.

Clashes between religious and ethnic groups in Jos and surrounding villages have claimed hundreds of lives in recent years.

President Goodluck Jonathan pledged Saturday to hunt down those responsible for Friday's bombings.

Also on Friday, six people were killed in northeastern Nigeria during attacks on two churches by Muslim extremists, authorities said.
