Ex-Dominican President Blanco, 84, dies

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- Former Dominican Republic President Salvador Jorge Blanco, 84, died Sunday after several weeks in a coma, his doctors said.

El Dia reported Blanco died about 3:30 a.m. at his residence. The Dominican newspaper said he had undergone multiple brain operations after suffering a head injury in a fall at his home Nov. 20.

Blanco, a leader in the Social Democratic Party, served as president from 1982-86.

El Nuevo Diario said Blanco's body will lie in state at the Palace and Congress Monday with his burial set for Tuesday.
