Anarchists claim Rome embassy bombs

ROME, Dec. 24 (UPI) -- An Italian anarchist group has left a statement claiming it set off letter bombs at the Swiss and Chilean embassies in Rome.

''We have decided to make our voice heard with words and deeds. … We will destroy the dominant system ... Long live anarchy," read a note signed by the Informal Anarchist Federation. The note was found in a box at the scene of one of the explosions, the Italian news agency ANSA reported Friday.

Interior Minister Roberto Maroni said before the note was found that anarchists were suspected given the similarities to parcel bombs sent to foreign governments and embassies in Athens last month.

"These groups are very violent. They are present in Spain and Greece, as well as Italy, and are closely linked," he said.

The note confirmed the link since it was signed by the federation's Lambros Fountas Revolutionary Cell, named after a Greek anarchist killed by Athens police in March.

Neither of the embassy workers injured in Thursday's explosions suffered a life-threatening injury but the Swiss Embassy employee risks losing use of one hand.
