BRUSSELS, Dec. 21 (UPI) -- The former head of the Kosovo Liberation Army's intelligence branch says a report on trafficking in human organs is an effort to undercut talks with Serbia.
The report by Dick Marty, a former Swiss prosecutor, accuses Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci and Kadri Veseli, who created the KLA secret service, of harvesting organs from captured Serbs during the civil war. Marty said British and other intelligence agencies were aware of the KLA's illegal activities, which also included drug smuggling.
Veseli told the EUobserver the report is "based on no facts, no proof and without the backup of a real legal investigation."
Kosovo and Serbia are about to begin peace talks on issues like the future of Serb enclaves in the breakaway republic. Veseli said the report can only undermine them and stall the peace process.
Marty, if he has any evidence, should have presented it to Eulex, the European Union police agency, Veseli said.
"But since he is trying to manipulate the facts by imposing his version of the truth, he has committed a crime," he said. "He has set out to judge not some names, but a whole nation."
