Ukraine, U.S. secure nuclear material

KIEV, Ukraine, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- Thousands of radioactive materials from a Ukrainian power plant have been secured, a U.S. agency said Monday.

At a Kiev ceremony, U.S. and Ukrainian officials celebrated the successful removal of more than 3,900 "radiological sources" from the Electron Gaz Plant in Zholtiy Vodi, the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration said.

The materials, left behind when the plant's operator went bankrupt, were transported in 23 shipments to a high-security building at the Dnipropetrovsk Radon facility built with U.S. funds. Ukraine's Ministry of Emergency Situations and State Nuclear Regulator Committee carried out the operation.

"Today marks a major milestone in locking down radiological material that could be used by terrorists in a radiological dispersal device," said Anne Harrington, the U.S. agency's non-proliferation chief.
