Gang that drugged gays said caught

ROME, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- Rome police say they have broken a gang that robbed tourists by giving them drugged wine at a gay bar and may have killed an American.

Kelly Cullen, 56, who was found dead Nov. 14 in a park overlooking the Colosseum, is believed be one of the victims.

"The first tests showed the American -- who was found robbed and partially clothed -- died of a heart attack, but we suspect blood analysis will show he had a fatal reaction to the knockout drug the gang gave him," police official Tiziana Lorenzo told the British Guardian newspaper.

The gang, two Romanians and an Egyptian, began offering the wine spiked with benzodiazepine to tourists this summer, during a wave of anti-gay attacks on patrons of the Coming Out bar.

As their victims began to pass out, the gang would guide them into the park and rob them. Up to 25 Americans were robbed, along with British, Spanish, Swiss and German tourists.

Tipped off by bar staff, undercover police caught the alleged gang Nov. 16.
