JERUSALEM, Dec. 9 (UPI) -- Israel's air force bombed three terror targets in Gaza, a day after five mortar shells were fired at the western Negev wounding an Israeli, the army said.

The air force bombed a weapons manufacturing plant and storehouse in central Gaza Thursday and two sites in northern Gaza described as place of terrorist activity, the army said.

The air crews identified accurate hits and returned to base safely, military officials said.

The airstrikes came hours after Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi described the current situation along the Gaza border as fragile.

Meeting with soldiers serving on the Gaza border, Ashkenazi said the army has recently noted deterioration in the situation along the Gaza border and an increase in bomb attacks and attacks against Israel.

The army chief said further operational activities along the Gaza border should be expected in the near future. "Fighting will continue along the border and one must be prepared, because being prepared dictates the results of battle. It is possible we will need to expand our operations. The next round will be bigger and must end without any doubt over who wins. We surpass the other side by far," the army's Web site quoted him saying.

Late Wednesday night an Israeli civilian sustained light to moderate injuries when a mortar shell exploded in the Eshkol Regional Council area, the army said.

The Popular Resistance Committee claimed responsibility for the mortar attacks but said it fired 10 mortars at southern Israel on Wednesday, the International Middle East Media Center said.
