30 bodies pulled from Colombian mudslide

BELLO, Colombia, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- Searchers have pulled 30 bodies from a massive mudslide that buried dozens of houses in Bello, Colombia, with 94 people still missing, officials said Tuesday.

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos promised recovery efforts would continue until all the missing are accounted for, El Colombiano reported.

"It's the least we can do," said Santos, who toured Bello Tuesday after returning from New York, where he attended a meeting of countries that are party to the International Criminal Court.

At least 50 homes were destroyed by the Sunday afternoon landslide.

The death toll from the slide brings the number of people killed by recent heavy rains and flooding to nearly 200, with another 143 missing, 248 injured and 1.6 million homeless, the newspaper said.

"We will work around the clock until the last moment, until we recover the last body," said Santos, who added his Cabinet would meet to address the flooding emergency, which he acknowledged has overwhelmed the country response resources.

"This winter is unprecedented in our history."
