Foul weather hangs over Europe

LONDON, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- The British and Europeans suffered another round of snow and freezing temperatures Wednesday as a powerful winter storm refused to let go, forecasters said.

Wicked weather was reported in Germany, Poland and many parts of the United Kingdom, creating hazardous travel conditions, Euronews.net reported.

Slippery roads in Germany were blamed for the deaths of at least three people and the injury of more than a dozen others in vehicle mishaps.

In Bavaria a cattle carrier with more than 100 pigs onboard overturned Tuesday, killing 25 of the animals and injuring the driver.

The BBC reported heavy snow warnings for Yorkshire, the East Midlands and northwest England as well as parts of Scotland.

Edinburgh Airport in Scotland remained closed until at least Thursday, officials said.

Severe disruptions were reported at Gatwick Airport near London and a number of regional airports.

Thousands of Scottish children enjoyed a holiday as schools remained closed for a third day in a row.

In England some 300 schools were shut.

Commuting by car or train was a nightmare in many areas of Britain.

Tony Scott told the BBC he tried to leave London Tuesday evening for the train trip home to Tunbridge and all the rail cars were overcrowded.

When he finally boarded a train at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, Scott said it got no further than suburban Orpington before heading back to London.
