Clinton encouraged by new Iran talks

ASTANA, Kazakhstan, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Wednesday Iran's agreement to a multinational meeting next week on its nuclear program is encouraging.

Talking to reporters during a trip to Kazakhstan, Clinton said the United States and its allies have one primary purpose for the meeting in Geneva, Switzerland.

"The international community has been very clear. Iran is entitled to the use of civil nuclear power for peaceful purposes. It is not, however, entitled to a nuclear weapons program," she said. "And the purpose of the negotiations will be to underscore the concern of the entire international community in Iran's actions and intentions. We hope that Iran will enter into these negotiations in the spirit that they are offered."

The meeting involves the so-called P5-plus-one, the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council plus Germany.

Clinton acknowledged Iran failed to implement an agreement reached last year. But she said she and other U.S. officials are "encouraged" by Iran's impending return to the table.
