Bomb kills Iranian nuclear scientist

TEHRAN, Nov. 29 (UPI) -- An Iranian nuclear scientist was killed and another wounded in two bomb attacks in Tehran Monday, officials said.

Two motorcyclists attached the bombs to the scientists' cars as they left their homes for work, and reportedly detonated the explosives by remote control, the Fars news agency reported.

Iranian Interior Minister Mustafa Mohammed-Najar accused Israel and the United States of being behind the bombings.

"The CIA and Mossad have always been the enemies of Iran and constantly tried to sabotage our technological progress," he told state television.

The Iranian Students News Agency named the dead scientist as Majid Shariari and said Fereydoun Abbasi, also a nuclear scientist, was wounded. The agency said the two worked at Tehran's Shahid Beheshti University.

Their wives were slightly injured in the attacks, local reports said.

Ali-Akbar Salehi, head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, told the Islamic Republic News Agency the dead scientist was one of his students, and was involved in a major project.

"I promise that we will deliver more Shahriaris to the Iranian nation, and such plots will just accelerate the speed of Iran's nuclear program," Salehi said.

IRNA said Abbasi is a member of the Revolutionary Guards and also lectures at the Imam Hossein University, affiliated with the military unit.
