JERUSALEM, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- Israeli Police say they found no wrongdoing in the case of an American art student who lost an eye when hit by a gas canister in a West Bank protest.
Emily Henochowicz, a student at Cooper Union College in New York, participated in a protest in May in Qalandiyah, north of Jerusalem, against the Israeli raid on a Turkish boat seeking to break the Gaza blockade, Haaretz said Sunday.
Border police deployed at the site fired gas canisters at demonstrators to disperse them. One canister hit Henochowicz in the face. As a result she lost one eye and suffered several other fractures, but returned to the United States to complete her studies, the newspaper said.
Judea and Samaria police investigated the incident after Henochowicz's parents filed a complaint, charging border police fired canisters directly at the faces of protesters on purpose, the paper said.
Video footage showed the canister ricocheted off a barricade and was not directly fired at the group, the newspaper said.
Attorney Michael Sfard, representing the Henochowicz family, accused police of conducting a negligent investigation and called Judea and Samaria police "a sewage treatment plant for the Border Police," the newspaper said. He claimed investigators had failed to question a Haaretz reporter and photographer who covered the event.
Police said their findings had been submitted to the district attorney's office for review, the paper said.
