LONDON, Nov. 27 (UPI) -- Northeast England and much of Scotland were under a severe weather advisory Saturday as inches of early snow continued to fall.
Forecasters said high wind and snow would continue through the weekend in the earliest that widespread snow storm to hit the British Isles in 17 years.
"The snow we're seeing at the moment and expecting to see is the heaviest widespread snow since November 1993 when the Highlands got around 12 inches and North Yorkshire got more than 10 inches," Met Office forecaster John Hammond told The Daily Telegraph. "Winds are continuing to blow in from a north-easterly direction over the course of the rest of this week and into next week."
The BBC said Saturday overnight temperatures slid into the teens in parts of Scotland and Wales. Combined with warmer ocean temperatures, the cold snap became a snow generator.
The bad weather caused widespread problems with traffic, closed the Norwich airport and threw the weekend sports calendar into question.
Ireland had its share of problems as well. The Irish Times reported traffic in many areas had been slowed and public transportation was facing long delays.
