Israel reports rise in Muslim population

JERUSALEM, Nov. 15 (UPI) -- Jerusalem's population is one-third Muslim, Israel's statistics bureau reported Monday.

The report also said Muslims had a 2009 birthrate of 3.7 children per woman, a decline from 4.7 in 2000 but higher than in Syria, Lebanon and Egypt, The Jerusalem Post said.

At the end of 2009, the Muslim population in Israel -- not including the occupied territories -- was estimated at 1,286,000, an increase of 32,000 from the end of 2008.

Among the Muslim population, 264,000 were living in Jerusalem, making up 34.2 percent of residents and the largest community of Muslims in Israel.

The second-largest community of Muslims was Rahat, with 51,600, followed by Nazareth with 49,600 and Umm al-Fahm with 46,000.

The figures show that among Muslims 15 and older in Israel in 2009, 39.8 percent were employed -- 61 percent of men and 18 percent of women.

Muslims accounted for 6.5 percent of students in Israeli universities, up from 3.1 percent in 1989.
