WINNIPEG, Manitoba, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- A 16-year-old girl in western Canada died of a gunshot wound in an apparent murder-attempted suicide, police said Thursday.

A 17-year-old boy who appeared to have shot himself was airlifted Wednesday from Roblin, a small town in rural western Manitoba, to a hospital, CTV reported.

Police said an autopsy was performed Thursday, finding the girl was killed by a gunshot. Investigators said the death is being treated as a homicide.

Her family identified the girl as Meagen Mancheese, a student at Goose Lake High School in Roblin. Her uncle, Jamie Maliteare, described her as a popular girl who played on the high school basketball team.

"All the world loved her and that's why it's so shocking," said Maliteare. "It doesn't matter who did it. It's done and we miss her."
