APEC meetings start Saturday

Nov. 12, 2010 at 7:21 PM

TOKYO, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao landed in Japan Friday in preparation for weekend meetings of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, officials said.

Hu's attendance at the 18th Economic Leaders' Meeting comes on the heels of his presence at the fifth summit of the Group of 20 in Seoul, China's state-run news agency Xinhua said.

The agenda of this year's meeting, under the theme "Change and Action," is to assess the progress of the Bogor Goals established in 1994 in Bogor, Indonesia.

The association was organized in 1993 under President Bill Clinton.

Among these goals is free and open trade, cooperation and increased investment in the Asia-Pacific area, Xinhua said.

Most of APEC's 21 countries, which span four continents, have a coastline on the Pacific Ocean.
