U.N.: Pakistan needs more flood funds

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- Flood victims in Pakistan might face a cold winter if emergency funding for victims doesn't increase soon, officials said.

The United Nations has initiated several appeals for funding to help the victims of the worst natural disaster in Pakistan's history, GEO News reported.

"We are looking at another emergency in the north with winter coming," U.N. spokeswoman Stacey Winston said. "We do not want the people to be left out in the cold. We want to provide them with the housing and with the materials they need to rebuild their homes."

"It is still a serious emergency and that is what we have to convey to the world -- that Pakistan cannot be forgotten, that people are still very much suffering."

The U.N. said millions of people are without food, water, shelter, and other basic necessities as a result of the July-August flooding.

The floods killed nearly 1,800 people and displaced 21 million others.

"We need the funds and the support and resources to reach people in need so that they can go home and they can rebuild their lives," Winston said.
