Iranian woman reported close to execution

TABRIZ, Iran, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- An Iranian woman's execution for adultery is imminent, an advocate for her cause said Wednesday.

Authorities have confirmed Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani's death penalty, and the sentence could be carried out as soon as Wednesday, said Mina Ahadi of the International Committee Against Stoning. But whether stoning will be the method is not clear.

Ahadi said a letter from Tehran authorizing the execution was received Sunday by the prison in Tabriz holding Ashtiani. She cited a source close to the woman's family.

Ashtiani, 43, a mother of two, became an international cause when she was sentenced to death by stoning for adultery and killing her husband.

Ashtiani's son and her attorney are still in jail after being arrested last month, Ahadi said. Authorities also are holding two German journalists who were interviewing them.
