Driver with bionic arm killed in crash

VIENNA, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- An Austrian man thought to be the first to drive using a mind-controlled bionic arm has been killed in the crash of his car, authorities said.

Christian Kandlbauer, 22, was found in the wreckage of his specially adapted Subaru Tuesday and died in a hospital Thursday after being removed from life-support, the BBC reported.

Authorities said it is not known whether his bionic arm was a factor in causing the accident.

Kandlbauer lost both of his arms four years ago in an electrical accident and was fitted with a mind-controlled arm, said to be the first such project of its kind in Europe.

Using the bionic left arm and a normal prosthetic limb for his right arm, Kandlbauer was able to pass a driving test in a specially converted car.

A truck driver came across his burning car on a road near Bad Waltersdorf in southeast Austria Tuesday.

Firefighters were called to free Kandlbauer from the mangled wreckage.
