Calif. pot initiative opinions split

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- California's ballot proposition to legalize marijuana is sparking a major generational and political divide, a poll indicates.

Proposition 19, the initiative that would legalize and tax marijuana, is overwhelmingly opposed by Republicans, a Los Angeles Times/University of Southern California poll indicates.

There's also a big divide of feelings on the measure based on age, the Times reported Friday.

The poll showed voters younger than 40 are in favor of it by 48 percent to 37 percent, but older voters are not. Among voters 65 and over, only 28 percent support the measure, while 59 percent said they were opposed.

Women were also leaning against the proposition, which the poll found to be trailing badly, the Times said.
