Mom who killed kids was depressed

TORONTO, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- A Canadian woman accused of drowning her two young daughters progressed from a normal teen into a depressed and paranoid adult, her mother testified.

Faye Goodine appeared as the first defense witness after the prosecution wrapped up its case at the trial of her daughter Elaine Campione, The (Toronto) Star reported Wednesday.

Campione, 35, faces two counts of first-degree homicide in the drowning deaths of 3-year-old Serena and 19-month-old Sophia Campione in 2006.

Defense attorney Mary Cremer has told the court she will prove that Campione was not sane at the time of the drownings and therefore cannot be held responsible.

Campione's mother said her daughter met her future husband while working as a nanny in the Toronto area.

She described the husband, Leo Campione, as highly critical and said her daughter catered to his every demand.

Goodine said her daughter became paranoid over time and believed her husband was going to take the children away.
