STELLARTON, Nova Scotia, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- An anonymous letter entered in a hearing for a municipal police chief appealing his firing accuses Canadian mounties of improprieties.
The unsigned letter made public Monday at the Nova Scotia Police Review Board hearing for former Stellarton police chief Ambrose Heighton raises allegations Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers attended a sex party where cocaine was used, the Globe and Mail reported. The officers' commander at the time was current Nova Scotia Justice Minister Ross Landry.
Heighton contends he was fired from his post two years ago because he complained about the poor relationship between the RCMP and local police departments.
The anonymous letter he forwarded as part of his appeal alleges sexually inappropriate conduct and cocaine use took place at a private party attended by RCMP members. The letter also claims an off-duty RCMP officer dropped a service pistol while jogging and another loaned a prohibited weapon to a girlfriend.
The letter alleges Landry knew of the claims, which are unproven, but did nothing about them, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.
"I'm not going to comment overall on the evidence that's there," Landry told reporters. "But as the evidence proceeds here it will clearly show that I was in charge of the district and that it was a well-run district."
The CBC reported the RCMP said it would be inappropriate to comment on the results of its investigation into the anonymous allegations.
