Residents were warned of possible strong aftershocks for the next week or so.

The same area was shaken by a string of quakes of similar magnitude in December 1990, Kyodo News said.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the epicenter was 70 miles east of Ishigaki-jima on Japan's Ryukyu Islands.
