125 tourists rescued after China landslide

HAIKOU, China, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- Tourists trapped by a landslide in a south China rainforest were rescued Monday, authorities said.

The landslide, triggered by torrential rains on the island of Hainan, stranded 125 tourists at a hotel on the side of Diaoluo Mountain in Lingshui County Saturday afternoon, Xinhua reported. Roads to the area were cut off.

The vacationers were visiting the rain forests during the weeklong holiday that began Friday, China's National Day.

By 3 p.m. Monday, all tourists had been evacuated to a farm run by the local forestry bureau. They will get medical checkups and rest before being taken by bus to the ports of Haikou and Sanya, a county government spokesman said.

The search continued for a farmer and a forestry worker reported missing Saturday.

The local weather bureau said 15 of 18 cities on Hainan were severely hit by the rains, which were forecast to last until Tuesday night.

Maritime authorities in Haikou forbade ferries and ships that could not withstand winds as strong as 46 mph to sail Sunday.
